This timepiece is exclusively available at the Grand Seiko Boutique on New Bond Street, London, limited to 50 pieces worldwide with only a very small number available in the UK.

‘The Nature of Time’ theme features prominently in Grand Seiko watch designs – a Japanese spirituality in which each moment is a unique expression unveiled through light and shadow. The watchmakers’ pride in their surroundings is represented from engineering watch movements to creating dials reflecting the beauty of Japanese nature.

The ‘Mystic Waterfall’ of the historical area once known as ‘Hisen’ is the latest addition to the Masterpiece Collection. It is inspired by the Tateshina Otaki waterfall, located near the Shinshu Shirakaba Plateau, home of the Grand Seiko Micro Artist Studio. Its design represents the vigorous water spray of the great waterfall within the forest.

Crafted in a 44GS case style, derived from the 1967 Grand Seiko ‘Grammar of Design’ blueprint, the hand-engravings of the dial continue onto the case, where Takumi artisans envisioned the refreshing flow of water. The case, crown and clasp are crafted from Platinum 950, paired with 14ct white gold hour and minute hands.

This timepiece is paired with both a black crocodile leather strap, and a Kyoto Leather strap, crafted from Japanese Wagyu leather in an area of Japan known for leathercraft. The waterfall-inspired ‘Kyoto Leather’ strap is created by hand using a foil stamping technique – a traditional artisan method being preserved for future generations in this contemporary design.

The exhibition case back shows the Grand Seiko exclusive in-house built 9R02 Spring Drive movement, crafted at the Micro Artist Studio by the brand’s Takumi watchmakers. Manually-wound, this timepiece is accurate to +/- 1 second per day, with a 3.5 day power reserve. The 9R02 comes with a hand-engraving service, whereby the 18ct yellow gold plate can be customised and engraved with any text.
