Description

This timepiece is limited to only 700 pieces worldwide.

2024 marks twenty years of the Grand Seiko 9R Automatic Spring Drive calibre – a groundbreaking 2004 innovation in a new automatic watch with one-second-a-day accuracy. This watch movement is powered by a main spring with a regulator without an escapement, combining the beauty of the mechanical watch with the precision of quartz.

To celebrate this anniversary, this piece has been crafted with Grand Seiko signature inspirations of nature, perfectionism and heritage.

The design inspiration of the ‘Morning Glow of Hotaka Peaks’ is the red dawn near to the Grand Seiko studios, whilst the peaks represent not just the mountainous landscape, but also the Takumi watchmakers’ aspiration to create the peak of watchmaking. In addition, the Tokyo Lion case design is a nod to the inaugural Grand Seiko in 1960; the iconic lion emblem designed to reflect the ambition to create the most precise, durable, and beautiful watch possible – to be ‘king’ of the watchmaking world just as the lion is the king of the jungle.

Within a case crafted from high-intensity lightweight titanium, the dial features a majestic lion’s mane pattern, under a dual-curve sapphire crystal glass. The dial has a ‘morgenrot’ gradation colouring – a word used by mountain climbers to describe the colour of a morning glow. Like sunrise, the colour of the dial will change at different angles, from red to orange. This timepiece features silver-coloured hour, minute, second, power reserve and GMT hands.

This Tokyo Lion piece features a chronograph functionality to accurately measure elapsed time. As well as this, it features a GMT function to measure multiple timezones simultaneously.

The exhibition case back showcases the in-house built 9R96 Spring Drive movement with an accuracy of +/-10 seconds per month, equivalent to +/-0.5 seconds per day. It has a power reserve of 72 hours, even with the chronograph function in operation.

Every Grand Seiko features signature high standards of precision, durability and legibility, handcrafted in Japan by Takumi artisans.
